Graham steps in with the solution
A summer spent solving real problems for a real company convinced undergraduate Graham Hayes that he was ready to take his first step into business at the age of 20.
Three years later his business is thriving and he is embracing the spirit of enterprise by expanding his activities and forming alliances with other companies.
Back in 2001 Graham, who owns Hayes Computing Solutions at Hethersett, near Norwich, was studying a Business Information Technology Degree at City College Norwich.
In the run up to his summer break he signed up with Norfolk and Waveney Enterprise Services (NWES) and joined the Shell Technology Enterprise Programme (STEP), a scheme which places undergraduates with companies who have important projects for the student to work on.
Working for Norfolk electrical specialist Kings and Barnhams he put in computerised stock control and ecommerce systems and his efforts earned him the title top STEP student in Norfolk.
The experience also convinced him that once he had completed his degree he was ready to leave education and start up his own business.
He said: “Philip King of Kings and Barnhams gave me the opportunity to think on my own and use my own initiative, which is what I thrive on."
“Phillip had a request for some work and I was able to provide the solution.”
He started Hayes Computing Solutions and has never looked back.
He said: “It’s been going really well since I started. Turnover has increased by 50% annually and it should do so again this year. We still do small websites and consultancy work but we have also moved up into managing the technical side of projects.
“We have taken on large data-based websites as partners with other companies and I am currently in charge of the technical side of one of the biggest website that’s ever been done in Norfolk.”
